Electives

One could get the sense that if Elaine Wilson didn’t look silly doing so, she would whistle while she works.

The long-time CultureWorks employee is first and foremost a teacher – she is very clear about that – but she is also a program coordinator overseeing curriculum, “facilitating things both teachers and students.”

Right now she and CultureWorks are in the middle of the second term of offering a choice of electives to all the students, to complement their regular classroom work.

And she’s loving every minute of the new venture.

“I am sure this is something the students would benefit from and also have a good time, because part of it is also about having a good time.”

In addition to the regular classes, each student now has the option of choosing from five electives each term. They include Business and Managemen(Levels C and D)Engineering and Technology (Levels C and D)IELTS (Levels A and B) Canadian Culture Studies (Levels A, B C and D) and The Daily Boomalang (Levels A, B, C and D).

Wilson said the reason for the adding electives was simple.

“We had a lot of comments from students, saying these regular classes are good but ‘I’m going into Engineering’, ‘I’m going into Business’,  and  ‘it would really help me if I had a chance to practise some of the vocabulary for those subjects’.”

“So it’s a great opportunity to help our students be more successful.”

And have a little fun along the way.
