Electives
In addition to our core academic English language programming, CultureWorks students are able to choose from a range of elective courses in Levels 4-7. These courses are designed to give students the opportunity to shape their own learning experience, to suit their own individual learning needs. We currently offer a variety of different elective courses that feature discipline-specific vocabulary as well as other academic skills, which will further support students as they go on to pursue their intended areas of study.
Advanced Grammar
Advanced Grammar provides practical opportunities for students to apply advanced concepts in grammar in a Canadian context and expand on and consolidate the grammatical structures introduced in earlier levels or previous training. Through a presentation, students can demonstrate the grammar concepts in specific authentic contexts. Students will increase the range of grammar structures that they use in their communication and will also improve upon the accuracy and appropriacy of their grammar.
Business & Management
Business & Management is designed to give students the opportunity to practice their academic English language skills within a Business context and provide a foundation for success in studying Business and related disciplines at the university level. Each unit features an intriguing business- related topic and is organized around three components of study: theory, case study, and academic skills. Students are able to build their vocabulary base while sharpening critical thinking skills.
Canadian Cultural Studies
Canadian Cultural Studies is designed to give students the opportunity to practice their academic English language skills within a collaborative, project-based learning environment. Emphasis is on promoting self-directed study, problem solving, and critical thinking through group and class discussions, and readings. Students also focus on deeper understanding of intercultural understanding and communication styles which provides a foundation for success in studying at the university level. Each unit of course is organized around three components of study: theory, practice, and oral and written skills through completing various assignments throughout the term.
The Daily Boomalang
The Daily Boomalang is an innovative course that allows students to practice their listening and speaking skills anywhere there is internet access. Carried out in real time, this online elective is focused on daily current events, guided by a course facilitator. Students have the opportunity to critically reflect upon ideas, share opinions, and discuss a variety of hot topics within an intimate, small class format. News articles/videos are available to students before the classes so that they can familiarize themselves with the topics for discussion in advance.
Engineering & Technology
Engineering & Technology is designed to give students the opportunity to practice their academic English language skills within a Technology, Engineering and Applied Sciences context and provide a foundation for success in studying Technology and related disciplines at the university level. Each unit features an intriguing topic in technology and is organized around three components: career skills, language skills, and language knowledge, applied through a variety of practice exercises and class activities.
IELTS
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized English language exam that is recognized for admission to college and university programs. It extensively tests all four language skills: reading writing, listening, and speaking. This elective course starts with an overview of the exam format and question types and continues with specific preparation for the different question types for each part of the exam. This course focuses on integrated skills and the strategies required for success when writing IELTS exams. Students will be given the opportunity to complete practical practice IELTS exams throughout the course while focusing on skill acquisition and performance across all four language areas.
Pronunciation & Conversation
Pronunciation & Conversation introduces students to English consonant and vowel sounds as well as stress, rhythm and intonation. Students will learn the detailed mechanics of sound production, while being given extensive opportunities to practice these skills through communicative, conversationally-based activities. Topics include every day themes and activities, making this course highly applicable to English in daily living while also helping students sharpen their language skills and build their confidence as English speakers.
